Make a Holiday Door Hanger!

by Kim on December 8, 2009

If you love a quick and easy project, this is it!  Much like our “how to make pillows” instruction, this design is meant to be a door hanger. I made a bunch of these last year for my children’s teachers and it was a hit. They’re so easy to put together and it’s free!

For those who hand-embroider, the design is included in the download.  If you have an embroidery machine, we also provide the embroidered version for free over at

With the holidays being such a busy time, we hope that you’ll find a moment for yourself to create this cheery and festive door ornament.

But don’t limit yourself to just a holiday design. Think of the possibilities of what can be placed on that front panel for other times of the year or other uses.  In fact, we want to hear what you think, so that is our Stocking Stuffer Question for you! Let’s hear it!

And if you love this design, you might also like others designs from the author, Shelli, of Needle in a Haystack! Find all of her gorgeous home decor projects here!

Wow I can’t believe I am one of the first posts!!

I think you can put really anything…if it goes on the inside of the house why not have fun ones to welcome some other events…like The Tooth Fairy…..

So your child can let the Tooth Fairy know there is a tooth under the pillow…
Something like…. ” Another Tooth for your Collection, Tooth Fairy”
Ok… that I just re read that it sounds kinda silly…but hey something like that!!

I HAVE downloaded the free design, in the event I ever become brave enough to hand embroider OR save enough pennies for an embroidery machine!
2 of my 3 daughters cheer for an all-star gym. I am imagining using pom-pom ribbon and the gym colors with a cheer-friendly saying!!! YEAHHH!

I made one of these last year using your directions-I used Christmas fabric around the edges and appliqued a black scotty dog in the middle for my sister in law and brother in law that have a scottie. I love the tooth fairy idea-you could also do a baby sleeping one.

4 Brigette 12.09.09 at 6:08 am

Wow Dawn! I know know what I can make for my brother and sister-in-laws new house :D They also have scotties. What a great idea, and it can still be Christmas themed. Woot! Can easily changed out the fabric to ones with hearts, and make a Valentine one, with a big heart in the middle or simply, “Love”.

What about Home Sweet Home? Or Bless This Home?

6 Mindy 12.09.09 at 7:09 am

I am going to download this right now! The tooth fairy idea was a good one or you could put baby sleeping and give it as a shower gift. Just change up the fabrics and use it anytime!

7 Carolyn Hutchinson 12.09.09 at 7:32 am

I got this pattern last year. It was a great idea for a fast fun gift!

8 Margaret 12.09.09 at 7:41 am

What about “Santa enter here” if your house has no fireplace!

9 Margaret 12.09.09 at 7:41 am

Just finished downloading as I type!

10 Christina Zacny 12.09.09 at 8:41 am

I forgot I had this one! I’m going to have to go through all of my patterns now…on my old computer and my new one. I’ll bet I find some inspiration! I thought this was adorable last year and had so many possibilities. Like Carrie S., I have two daughters that cheer and I have coached for two years. They share a bedroom and have a huge shelf full of trophies and medals, along with cheer memorabilia everywhere. So, a positive saying would be great to hang on their door.

I think for a Christmas saying, it should say….” Santa is Real!!”

SHHH! Baby sleeping! would be a good one! I wish I had seen this earlier. I like the idea of the teacher gifts but I already purchased something for them. Maybe for end of the year gifts…

12 Jen 12.09.09 at 8:59 am

I’m downloading it now too!

Have a holly jolly holiday!

14 Tiffani 12.09.09 at 9:12 am

I went to download that machine embroidery design, and found that I already downloaded it. Thank you for the reminder, I think this will be a great gift for the kids teachers.

15 happy 12.09.09 at 1:53 pm

Any designs would look good in this cute door hanger. Maybe: “Welcome to……”, etc..

16 happy 12.09.09 at 1:55 pm

Oh.. I’m downloading now. Thank You.

17 Dina 12.09.09 at 2:00 pm

I thought baby sleeping, prince or princess sleeping. You could put a child’s name on it and hang it on their door. Put naughty on one side and nice on the other!

18 Pascale 12.09.09 at 3:15 pm

I liked everyone’s ideas! Here’s another one: “STOP” and “GO” to hang outside bathroom door of little kids’ classrooms. I’ve made similar ones for my kids kindergarten & 1st grade classrooms. Their bathrooms didn’t have locks and the little ones didn’t want to be interrupted (and embarrassed!) when using the bathroom.

How about “Home is where the heart is”?

20 Dana 12.09.09 at 7:02 pm

I really like “Santa Enter Here” although I was thinking about “Quiet…Baby’s Sleeping”.

21 amanda 12.09.09 at 8:09 pm

I would like simply “Peace to all who enter our home.”

22 Ginger 12.09.09 at 8:10 pm

I downloaded the design. I think it would be good for a new Mom to have a “baby’s sleeping” hanger for her door. When I was a new Mom I would have loved that.

23 MelissaB 12.09.09 at 8:48 pm

I just downloaded the machine emb design, I’m going to make one for my friend for a Christmas gift. What an adorable idea!

24 Nancy 12.10.09 at 8:36 am

There’s Snow Place Like Home with a cute snowman.

25 Vicki Arnold 12.10.09 at 2:39 pm

I have this pattern and one of these days I am actually going to use it. I think it would be adorable to have one for each month (New Years theme, Valentines/love theme, etc) and have a special door they hang on. Making a special birthday one to hang on the special birthday girl/boy’s room would be cute. You could do the general Happy Birthday or something more creative, lol.

26 Jenn @ FFP 12.10.09 at 2:54 pm

Some black and white fabric along with a red and black patterned fabric would look great…something like “home sweet home” or pink colors with “girls only” stitched in the message area. There are so many possibilities! You could even make it reversible with an OPEN on one side and CLOSED on the other for a business!

27 Becky 12.10.09 at 4:13 pm

I just downloaded the design. Thank you very much.

28 crystal 12.11.09 at 12:29 am

Cute Pattern!!
I think personalized ones would be nice. Also Wish Upon A Star for a little girls room:)

29 Andrea McMann 12.12.09 at 6:49 am

Welcome would always be nice, or how about “Let it Snow…” My daughter would love a door hanger that said something about princesses, maybe just a crown with the word “Princess” embroidered on it.

Always Kiss me Goodnight

Baby Sleeping

Tooth Fairy

31 Sarah in MO 12.13.09 at 3:02 pm

Nope, I haven’t downloaded mine yet, but it looks like maybe I should!

32 Marilyn2222 12.14.09 at 8:21 am

I downloaded it last year or the year before and I’m sad to say that I have not made it yet.

33 Shelli 12.14.09 at 9:44 am

I have read through all the comments and ideas for sayings…you are all so creative! I love your ideas! A friend made a similar hanger that said, “Delighted You Came…” It was such a sweet gift.

34 Coodas Corner 12.14.09 at 12:14 pm

I made some of these last year for teacher gifts. Other sayings I have thought about are “#1 Teacher” “Welcome Home” and things like that.

35 Kristen 12.14.09 at 2:36 pm

I think you can use it for many things- it would be cute to do an embroidery on there for valentines, halloween, etc.

37 allison 12.15.09 at 1:09 am

I saw one that I like in the shops here. “You will always be my best friend – (because you know too much!)

38 Carolyn VanOstran 12.15.09 at 5:16 am

I love “Believe.” It can apply to many different things during the holidays. I will also make a series of three that say “Love”, Joy, and “Peace” then hang them by ribbons. Great project.

39 Kelly O. 12.15.09 at 6:18 am

How about Love, Joy, Peace or A Saviour is Born!

40 Deborah K 12.15.09 at 12:49 pm

on my way to download now.
