Make In-the-Hoop Hair Pretties with an Embroidery Machine!

by Kris on December 1, 2009

Being a mom and an aunt AND a neighbor of LOTS of little girls, I have been drooling over these adorable little hair pretties that continue to keep coming into SWAK from Pickle Pie Designs! Made with felt and entirely in the hoop, these will come together in no time at all! Perfect to wear throughout the holiday season and there are so many different ones to choose from! Have you hesitated to take on this project because you’ve never done an in-hoop project before? Let me take the worry away from you and show you just how easy they are! But fair warning…once you start, you may just become addicted!

Yes!!! These are very addicting! I found myself making outfits to match her hair pretties! They are so adorable. My son likes me to make him pins out of them, too. So you don’t even have to leave out your little guys.

thank you so much for this video – i am going to be attempting my 1st in the hoop projects this week – this helped me visualize it! also – i love swakembroidery – i’ve purchased several designs and they are all great! :) thanks

Great video Kris :) I really liked seeing how these came together as I’ve been thinking about trying to make some for my girls after the holidays when I have time to make stuff for me again ;) And I think our machines are super similar.

So cute! I just figured these required a 5 x 7 hoop…glad I was wrong! I need to try them out!

5 Dina 12.02.09 at 11:41 am

Thank you so much for putting this video on! I always wanted to try an in the hoop project but was too nervous! I am now going to have to do one!

6 Gina 12.03.09 at 1:50 am

I love this project!!! I would make these into pins , or maybe put a loop on the back and thread them onto the shoe strings, so one on each shoe! I wish I had an embroidery machine–maybe Santa will give me one this year (I’m crossing my fingers!).

7 Jean Lowenberger 12.03.09 at 4:15 am

These would be great as lapel pins, and the idea of having them personalized with a monogrammed initial is just great!!

8 valarie lewis 12.03.09 at 4:37 am

These would be adorable added to a ribbon bookmark, or even as package add-ons. they could be added to simple felt napkin rings too!

I love In the hoop stuff…so much work that the machine does instead of me!

I love the idea of using these as a gift tag. I’d also love an embroidery machine because I have five children and could easily embroider their things with one!

10 Tina 12.03.09 at 5:08 am

I love the idea of using “hair pretties” as pins. I would love an embroidery machine because it would add another layer of wonderful to the outfits I already make.

11 nancy ward 12.03.09 at 5:10 am

these could easily be used to make a quiet or activity book. you just add a little sticky back velcro to them or as changable design on a tshirt or hoodie. i teach 3-4 year olds with alittle time i’m sure i could come up with even more ways i could use them in class. now if i just owned one of these wonderful machines! santa are you listening?

12 Heather 12.03.09 at 5:16 am

These are too cute! You could also use these for embellishments for purses or on the brim of a cute hat. I would LOVE to get an embroidery machine so that I could teach my daughters to sew and embroider. My mom and grandmother were excellent seamstresses, and I wish I could pass that along to future generations.

13 Debbie 12.03.09 at 5:55 am

I do not have an embroidery machine, but seeing all of the wonderful things I could do with one, I sure wish I did. However, I just bought a serger, so an embroidery machine will have to wait awhile, unless a free one finds my front step. lol

14 Mindy 12.03.09 at 6:29 am

I LOVE these! I have always been unsure of in the hoop projects but you made it look so easy! Can’t wait to give it a try! You could add these to napkin rings or use them as lapel pins! So cute!

15 Velda 12.03.09 at 6:35 am

In the hoop projects are so easy to do and I hope others will try it after watching this video. She gave such good instructions. I love using my embroidery machine for projects like these because they are so quick and easy. You could make tiny ITH projects and sew then on a small amount of elastic for a little girls bracelet also.

16 Tammy 12.03.09 at 6:38 am

Thanks for the video. I love the idea of using them as package decorations!

17 kimber 12.03.09 at 6:42 am

As pins on sweaters or as cute gift tags on gifts! Love them!

Thanks for a great site.

Oh, and why would I love an embroidery machine? Because I have 3 children! Isn’t that enough??? :)

Thanks again!

18 Jen 12.03.09 at 6:53 am

Gift tags or ornaments. What a great idea!

19 Kimberly 12.03.09 at 7:11 am

I love my emboridery machine! I’ve made so many awesome things (many off of SWAK- Thanks!!). I have not tried these hair pretties yet, but they look like fun… I have a nine month old baby and I think these would make great child proof ornaments to hang on the bottom of the tree.

20 Granmama 12.03.09 at 7:13 am

Never realized how easy in the hoop projects could be. These can be used not only as hair pretties, but also as gift tags, pins, tree ornaments. Great simple project for Christmas!

21 Diana Frakes 12.03.09 at 7:15 am

you can do so much witht he machine. I added names to our stocking this year and want to make a bag for my daughter for her softball and karate gear with her name on it and maybe a cute girl figure playing softball and karate..
Cute hair pins…

22 Sara@HappyBrownHouse 12.03.09 at 7:31 am

Ornaments, Lapel Pins, tags for presents….the possibilities are endless! So glad I can make these with my embroidery machine!

23 Laura Pearce 12.03.09 at 7:40 am

I think these would make a super cute sorting game for kids. You could put different themes into a fabric bag and let the kiddos draw them out and sort them by theme, color, letter, whatever you choose. With the included alphabet you could really do a lot with these :)

24 Sarah in MO 12.03.09 at 7:47 am

These would be so cute added to a gift package or put on a homemade Christmas card. Great ideas and so easy – now all I need is an embroidery machine. :)

25 Suzan 12.03.09 at 7:59 am

These would be cute as a magnet. My girls love displaying art work on the refrigerator. Maybe I should be asking Santa for an embroidery machine for Christmas!! I don’t think there is a limit to all the things you can do with one!! Thanks for showing how easy this project can be! Keep up the good work!

26 Tiffani 12.03.09 at 8:01 am

I like the idea of using them to add to gifts.

27 Misty 12.03.09 at 8:09 am

These would be really cute in a classroom. You could attach thumb tacks to the back and use them on a bulletin board or to make special days on the calendar.

28 Jennifer C 12.03.09 at 8:12 am

I like the idea of adding them to the top of a package. That way after the gifts are opened everyone has a personalized ornament for the tree. I want to do this next year with the bag tags pattern. Why next year? Because this years gifts were set when I spotted the great weekend bag and duffle that came out after it. I’ll be making my family those for Christmas next year. Oh, back to the question…

I don’t have an embroidery machine, but would LOVE one. I don’t think Santa will be bringing me one this year, but if he did… ahhh… It would take my daughter’s outfits from wonderful to fabulous. Adding embroidery to an outfit is like adding all the toppings to a sundae. All my daughter has now is ice cream; it’s great, but could be a lot better.

29 Robyn 12.03.09 at 8:12 am

These are so cute. You cou ld also use them for package toppers, or even ornaments, ooh, or bookmarks!

30 Tonya Blevins 12.03.09 at 8:28 am

I’d love to add them to the toe of shoes!! Like the clip ons to dress up a pair of shoes! How fun!

31 Stacey Ezell 12.03.09 at 8:51 am

I love these and all of the other SWAK designs! They are soooo cute! Besides hair clips they would also make adorable zipper pulls for backpacks and pocketbooks. You could also string them together to make garland for your tree or cut a slit in the back and put it on a piece of sheer ribbon for a super cute necklace for adults and kids. The options are endless!

32 Christine Christiansen 12.03.09 at 8:51 am

I am going to give my first in the hoop project a try this week. Thanks for that how to video. I think they would make cute napkin rings for Christmas meals or name place markers, and of course they will be adorable for my daughter to wear in her hair. I can’t wait!

33 Laurie Stasiuk 12.03.09 at 9:00 am

Great Video. I have been looking at these quite a bit lately. The answer is use them as pins, teachers gifts, gift add on’s or ornaments. I am sure there are some uses I forgot, but no matter what these are a great YCMT item.

34 Stacey Ezell 12.03.09 at 9:02 am

I would love an embroidery machine. I am a stay-at-home mom with a love for crafting. I started my own business about a year ago. It’s called Mattie Lauren Kids. I make items for boys and girls. I’ve wanted an embroidery machine for quite a while, but just can’t afford one. Having one of these machines would take my crafting and business to the next level and make me the happiest mom in the world! : )

35 Suz313 12.03.09 at 9:07 am

Fantastic! No more videos today! I am off to the sewing room! Thanks for a wonderful gift idea!

36 gramma grammie 12.03.09 at 9:23 am

I think these would make an adorable Scrap Book embellishment!

37 Deborah Wuest 12.03.09 at 9:32 am

These would make cute embellishments for clothing too!
I would LOVE to have an embroidery machine.

38 Connie T 12.03.09 at 9:36 am

Question and the answer is ….use them as the gift tags or even ornaments…which I have to say my mine was going that way before she even said it on the video…..super idea!!

39 Jacki Singer 12.03.09 at 9:44 am

The hair clips would also be cute as a pin, ornament, gift tags. I am really big into advent calendars so this would be cute to put in a pocket with a note attached to it. Way fun!

40 Amy HInojosa 12.03.09 at 9:46 am

I think that hair pretties would also make nice items to put on christmas packages for tags!!

41 Jacki Singer 12.03.09 at 9:47 am

Oh! I can not believe I forgot to mention an Embroidery Machine. If you do not have one, save your pennies! It is the coolest “appendage” to your sewing room. The girls at YCMT have darling patterns and fun projects to make and it comes out looking like you spent hours but the machine does most of the work for you. Check out their sister site SWAKembroidery.com!!

42 Kerrie B. 12.03.09 at 10:02 am

Great idea using them as gift tags instead of hair pretties, though wouldnt they be cute done with the ponys and spelling JOY or Noel down the back of a long braid. :)
I have an embroidery machine and love it, though I have my eye on a commercial embroidery machine for some more serious stitching. :)

43 Kristi 12.03.09 at 10:35 am

How darling these are!! They could even decorate a wreath or garland! Oh, or napking rings. Really so cute!

44 Jessica Bosse 12.03.09 at 10:37 am

You can use them besides in your hair also as a broche or as an ornament in the christmas tree. Or put it into the christmas cards which you send to your family and friends.

45 Lori 12.03.09 at 10:41 am

So Cute! These would make my holiday table look so good on napkin rings or place cards. If you make them into ornaments with the initial it could be placecard and take home gift at a dinner party. I would love to have an embroidery machine.

46 Marilyn2222 12.03.09 at 11:01 am

Thanks for the video. I didn’t realize you could make them as ornaments too.

47 crazykat323 12.03.09 at 11:25 am

Love these !! I would think since you said they work up so quickly, making a “bunch” wouldnt be too hard! I would use them to make a simple Tic-tac-toe board to take in the car for trips to Grandma &Grandpas house!! you could make a square “board” out of felt, use rickrac to devide squares, & then sew a pocket on back (velcro top) to hold game pieces. would be great for “quiet time” as well! I would also use them as zipper pulls for little mittened hands! Embroidery machines are the “dream machine” of every sewing room!! wow………..

48 Alyson 12.03.09 at 11:30 am

My girls would love them for their dolls hair, we could put them on purse or bag straps or as ‘pins’ to make outfits cuter. They could even be buttons.

49 Dina 12.03.09 at 11:37 am

I love the idea of using them as tags for gifts.

50 Bethany 12.03.09 at 11:39 am

These are just darling! Another cute way to use these would be as applique pieces for hand knitted or crocheted items such as hats or mittens…or add a ribbon and a clip and you could use them as a baby pacifier keeper!

Thanks for all the holiday ideas! :)

51 Nancy 12.03.09 at 12:29 pm

These would make fabulous gift toppers that could be used for ornaments the next year. They’d also be great as the centerpiece on a Christmas necklace.

Santa, PLEASE bring me an embroidery machine.

52 Margaret 12.03.09 at 12:35 pm

I’d love an embroidery machine to make super cute outfits for my 4 month old!

53 Margaret 12.03.09 at 12:36 pm

The hair pretties would also make great lepel pins for teachers!

54 Peggy 12.03.09 at 1:12 pm

I love “in the hoop” projects. Santa hat could be used as lapel pin and package decorations, or Christmas tree decorations.

55 Tiff@ThreePeas 12.03.09 at 3:10 pm

I think the “pretties” could be used as a pendant on a necklace too. Those are so cute!

56 jan 12.03.09 at 3:20 pm

Maybe I would make these different colors and use as wine glass tags for a holiday party or add on coffee sleeves……….
An embroidery machine would be amazing to have, especially as I have my first grandchild on the way…….wow!!!!!!! I would be super busy…………

57 Becky 12.03.09 at 3:33 pm

These would be great as pins or ornaments and then incorporated into your Christmas cards. I would love an embroidery machine for all the obvious reasons….so many things to do with it.

58 Margie 12.03.09 at 4:39 pm

The video makes this look so easy! Maybe Santa will bring me an embroidery machine … This could be used as a dinner place card with the guest’s initial on it.

59 Carolyn Hutchinson 12.03.09 at 4:56 pm

I think these would make cute gift tags.

60 shelley cline 12.03.09 at 6:47 pm

I like these pretties. wow you could use them like buttons or embelishments to wall hangings or shirts.

61 sandra dixon 12.03.09 at 7:27 pm

you can use them as pins to wear on your clothing

62 Sarah Ulfers 12.03.09 at 7:49 pm

I like the gift tag idea.

63 Vicki Arnold 12.03.09 at 7:54 pm

Ok, this video made me want an embroidery machine SO bad! Love the idea of using them for ornaments. Those would be super cute strung along a pine garland/swag.

64 Mama Lusco 12.03.09 at 9:13 pm

I have used hair pins on a sweater as a pin. I would love an embroidery machine to embellish my girls clothing, towels, and more. It’s on my wish list!

65 Elizabeth 12.04.09 at 12:06 am

I like the idea of using these as gift tags. So cute!

66 Rachel 12.04.09 at 9:49 am

You coud use them as pins on backpacks or bags or as gift tags or for flannel board play for the the kids. You could sew a backing on them and make finger puppets I could probably think of more but the kids are calling :) .

67 Adena 12.04.09 at 6:55 pm

I want an embroidery machine because I would love to make monogram gifts. Also, I just bought a really nice tablecloth from a thrift store that I am going to cut up (wrong size for my table, but loved the fabric!) and make dish towels, would love to make pretty trims around them.

68 Laura 12.04.09 at 8:41 pm

You could use them as cute holiday pins. I have an embroidery machine and love using it to jazz up inexpensive plain store bought clothes for my girls.

69 Sheila C 12.05.09 at 10:45 am

Hair pretties can also be used for Christmas ornaments, worn on a lapel, or used as a package decoration

70 Karen 12.05.09 at 5:59 pm

Hair pretties would make great package tie-ons for Christmas, birthdays, whatever. They’d also look really cute on the leg of a stuffed animal!

71 Marci 12.06.09 at 2:50 am

These are so cute! Now I want an embroidery machine. I could have a lot of fun with these. They would be cute embellishments for homemade cards.

72 Meridith S. 12.06.09 at 7:14 am

I love the Hair Pretties that I have. I have stitched them onto a thin fabric covered headband (the kind that come in the multi pack for a dollar or two) to make another cute hair accessory.

73 Jaime B. 12.06.09 at 8:32 am

I love Hair Pretties. My daughter is not a hair bow girl. I had almost gave up. I made her the Santa Hat Hair Pretties and she will not take them out. She loves them and I get to finally get to put “hair ornaments” in her hair.

I have used the Santa Hat Hair Pretties for gift tags on our presents and added them to everyones Christmas cards as ornaments.

74 Melissa 12.07.09 at 10:39 pm

Those would be super cute attached to a little girls purse or backpack.

75 Deborah K 12.08.09 at 4:28 pm

could be used as pencil toppers too. I would love to be able to make all these pretty things in the hoop on an embroidery machine or to add appliques to my girls’ outfits.

76 Carrie S. 12.09.09 at 1:30 am

The FIRST thing that poppped into my mind is “these would make adorable ornaments, (which I love to attach to gifts)! Looks like I am not the only with this idea!
When we took our girls to see Santa, my 5 year old asked for a “real sewing machine” and I sked for an embroidery machine ;)
I think it would be incredible to have an embroidery machine. What a wonderful tool to expand my skills, begin a WAHM business and enjoy spending time with my daughter, designing and creating beautiful things!

77 crystal 12.11.09 at 12:43 am

I think an embroidery machine would be great to put my hubby’s band name on things!!

78 Eileen 12.11.09 at 12:16 pm

Awwww they are so cute!!! I can put some on my grandaughters gift and she can USE it. thanks for the information!!!

79 Andrea McMann 12.12.09 at 6:42 am

I would LOVE an embroidery machine because it would allow me to make all the adorable projects you guys are always featuring here!

80 Kelly O. 12.15.09 at 6:29 am

slipping them on as gift tags or decorations is fun too!

81 Kristy F 12.16.09 at 9:41 pm

I would LOVE to have an embroidery machine because i see all of the adorable things that could be made her for my little girl (finally after having 2 boys!). My daughter is growing out her bangs and I would make her so many “pretties” to keep them out of her eyes and maybe since they are so cute she would keep them in! I would love to make personalized gifts for friends and family and those adorable pillows! So many things I could do with an embroidery machine!
