What’s an e-Book or e-Pattern?

There are truly 1001 reasons why e-Patterns (e-Books) are quickly becoming the fastest growing market for crafting patterns. Maybe you are still hesitating or have questions about e-Book patterns. We’d like to de-mystify the process of purchasing downloadable patterns by answering some common questions below. Let’s get started!

Q. What’s the difference between an e-Book, e-Pattern, and a downloadable pattern?

A. There’s really no difference. Each of the terms above describe a product that you purchase on the Internet and download to your computer to read or print.

Q. What’s the difference between an e-Pattern from YCMT/YCQT and one from one of the major pattern companies?

A. The major pattern companies often scan a regular-sized pattern to be printed and taped together. You have to print the whole thing to figure out what pages you need for the item you are creating. You Can Make This and You Can Quilt This sell patterns that are created on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper. While you might have to tape together two-to-three pages, you don’t have to print all the pattern pieces. We tell you which ones you need for the size you wish to make. For anything that can be cut without a pattern piece, (for instance, a square or rectangle), we provide instructions rather than giving you lots of pages to print.

Q. What if I don’t want to print the whole thing?

A. One of the fabulous benefits of purchasing e-Book patterns is that you get to choose what to print from the e-Book. If you want to print it all–go ahead! If you’d rather print just the pattern pages to save on ink–you can do that! Do you like to check the directions off as you go? Go ahead and write or highlight away, knowing you still have a clean copy on the computer! Do you tend to lose pattern pieces? With e-Book patterns, you can always re-print a piece!

Q. What if my computer crashes and I lose all my patterns?

A. One wonderfully unique feature of You Can Make This, You Can Quilt This, and SWAK Embroidery is that we have a section of our websites called “My Library.” As long as you have logged into your account prior to making a purchase on our site, any purchase you make on the site is stored on your “My Library” page. You can go back two days from now, or a year from now, and re-download any pattern you’ve purchased. If your computer crashes, you don’t lose anything you’ve invested in from our sites! Here’s a brief video demonstration on how “My Library” works!

Q. Do your patterns have to be re-scaled after you print them?

A. No. Right now, we do not offer any patterns that you have to increase or decrease in size to print at the correct size.  You might be given instructions on how to extend a pattern, or to create your own pattern on paper.  All our patterns come in PDF format, which helps to ensure that what you print is the correct size. When you print the pattern, just be certain that the “page scaling” option is set to “none” when the printer box pops up. Most of our patterns also come with a “test” square on the pattern page. When you print the pattern, measure the square to see if it is the recommended size. If it is–the pattern is also the correct size.

Q. I’m still not convinced. Why should I purchase e-Patterns instead of going to the sewing store?

A. Our customers have written us numerous times with the benefits of purchasing downloadable patterns. Here are just some of them:

  1. “I don’t have to do my hair and makeup to shop with you.”
  2. “I don’t have to keep track of my kids while I flip through pattern books.”
  3. “It’s nice to have a “green” option–I don’t have to store a pattern in a bulky envelope, nor do I have to find space on bookshelf. I just keep the file on my computer!”
  4. “I love the variety I can find online. My quilt shop only carries a small number of patterns.”
  5. “I don’t have to drive miles away to the nearest quilt shop, which might or might not have what I need.”
  6. “I don’t have to pay postage or worry about it getting lost in the mail.”
  7. “You have patterns from top designers–why would I want to shop anywhere else?”
  8. “I love that you often include step-by-step instructions. It’s like having someone there helping me along.”

We think that downloadable patterns are the future and we hope you agree! If you have a question we have not answered above–leave us a comment and we’ll answer it! If you haven’t taken the e-Pattern plunge yet, be sure to visit our free project pages for samples–or sign up for our newsletters! Each newsletter comes with a bundle of free patterns not available on the sites!

I just wanted to say thank you for such a variety in patterns! I love being able to download a pattern, print it out and make it up all from the convenience of my home. I save on fuel and because I use recycled paper to print it on, it is all so environmentally friendly! I also have to comment on the “My Library” page, its insurance for patterns! I don’t get that benefit anywhere else! Thanks!!!

What a great Q & A Lorie! I know there was a time when I had no clue what an e-pattern was and what it could do for me! They make a Mom’s life much easier! When you have an hour to sew at 2 in the morning it is hard to find a store open! Thank you to YCMT!
