1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Barbara Edmondson – I love sewing. I’ve been sewing since I was 10 years old. (That was about 45 some years ago.) I’ve taught sewing for 5 years and my business did very well. I’ve taught many different types of people, and see how they think and learn. I want them to learn a little at a time without feeling overwhelmed and I want them to get the satisfaction of completing a project in 1-2 classes. I hear and see how they need instructions written. So, I started creating simple patterns for first time sewers that are very easy to follow, mainly because I couldn’t find any I was happy with to teach beginners from, and have seen that my students like my patterns. I teach my students from these patterns. Some students take them home and follow by themselves. I’ve had good success and students really like the simple instructions.

2. What are your favorite projects to design?
I like designing useful things that don’t require fitting, things beginners can make and feel a sense of accomplishment. I like to simplify instructions for beginners.

3. What is your favorite thing you have made for yourself? For someone else?
My favorite thing I made is a princess dress for my grand daughter for her 2 year old birthday. It was yellow satin and organza, fully lined and seams tucked in inside so they didn’t hurt her. She loved it!

4. What is your favorite season/holiday to decorate for?
Hhmmmm, undecided! — Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Independence Day.

5. What DIY tips or tricks would you like to share with customers?
It’s easier to sew flat areas first, before seams that bring it to shape. That’s why I love my Just Right Tote – it’s all sewn flat until the end! Also, beware of nice photos of patterns enticing you because the instructions may be difficult to follow.

6. Any other interests or hobbies?
I also enjoy crocheting, knighting, hand embroidery, and photography.

7. Do you have a favorite quote?
I agree with Ralph Waldo Emerson: “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.”

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
After doing all types of needlework since I was a child, I felt like I had finally “come home” when I opened The Handmaiden’s Cottage in 2008. The Shop was inspired by the joy I received from creating handmade gifts for family and friends and the country setting of our cottage home. After receiving many requests for patterns of my designs, my efforts have turned to documenting the history of the Handmaiden’s Cottage through the publishing of my boutique designs in pattern form.

2. What are your favorite projects to design?
I love taking children’s artwork and creating something special through applique and embroidery techniques. One of my favorite pillows was created for a friend using her Son’s drawing of a “Bird’s Eye View” of a snowman!

3. What is your favorite thing you have made for yourself? For someone else?
One of my granddaughter’s was really into princesses and fairies when she was little, so I made her a special keepsake quilt by printing her sweet face on fabric and “dressing her up” in her own costumes on each square.

4. What is your favorite season/holiday to decorate for?
Christmas is one of my favorite times of year to decorate, but I try to keep it simple! Putting candles and simple wreaths in the windows of our cottage makes for a cozy Christmas!

5. What DIY tips or tricks would you like to share with customers?
The best way to hone your craft skills is to pick a few patterns that you find challenging and work through them!

6. Any other interests or hobbies?
I love nature and I try to get outside as much as possible! Gardening is definitely one of my favorite things to do! We also enjoy hiking with our two Labrador Retrievers and recently began kayaking!

7. Do you have a favorite quote?
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” Joseph Campbell

Elizabeth Singler of Mamma Can Do It!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a mamma of 6 and the wife of Mr Awesome. I love to cook, sew, garden, design, and snuggle up with my man in the evenings when the kids are in bed.

2. What are your favorite projects to design?
I like designing anything…but I especially like anything to do with diapers. It’s how my business got started, and since I simply love putting fluff on my baby’s rear, I am always up for a new diapering design.

3. What is your favorite thing you have made for yourself? For someone else?
My most recent favorite thing that I made was a set of bows/flowers that I gave as a gift for a baby shower. People always expect me to give snazzy sewn gifts since I’m the “design lady”. However, this shower had multiple crafty people going, so I decided to make something that no one else would – baby headbands! The mamma was thrilled and I had so much fun making them.

4. What is your favorite season/holiday to decorate for?
I love decorating for fall. The warm colors match my house decor anyway, but it give me a chance to play it up a bit. I bring pumpkins and squash in from the garden and put them on every surface. The other day I had each of my children take a mason jar out into the woods (we live in the boonies) and fill it with “treasures”. They came back with red berries, orange and yellow leaves, pine branches, pine cones, dried grasses and fall flowers. They are beautiful center pieces!

5. What DIY tips or tricks would you like to share with customers?
My number one downfall when I am following a tutorial or pattern is that I don’t always read the directions. I figure that I can wing it. Sometimes I can, but other times, I find that I’m sorry for winging it. For all of my customers who are like me, I recommend always reading through directions carefully before starting a project. MUCH less time and fabric wasted that way.

6. Any other interests or hobbies?
People are my interest. My family’s life goal is to minister to others via hospitality. We hope to adopt more children someday and take in families who need a temporary home. I love teaching young moms the ropes, so we work closely with pregnant and young moms and teenagers who are having a hard time.

7. Do you have a favorite quote?
My life verse (or chapter) in the bible is Proverbs 31. There is so much about the Proverbs 31 woman that is inspiring to me. What a kind, loving, hardworking, generous, creative, profitable and wise woman she is. Inspiring.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a fabric based interior designer and fabrication studio. When I purchased a Nook eReader I didn’t like any of the standard cases available and began making them for myself and soon friends. In browsing online, I found that a lot of shops were selling pattern instructions rather than a finished item, so I decided to write tutorials on sewing device covers. When I got my iPad (with pattern sale proceeds!) of course, it needed a cover too. In surveying my customers I found that purse patterns were of interest, so now I’m designing purses going forward. It has been so fun designing patterns and chatting with other sewists, I love sharing my designs with people all over the world!

2. What are your favorite projects to design?
I like designing cases and handbags. The pieces are manageable for printing on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper and most sew up quickly with professional results. There are so many inspirations for purses and an infinite range of styles and sizes.

3. What is your favorite thing you have made for yourself? For someone else?
The Emma Pattern is by far the best seller. Its hard not to love your leading item! The design is very practical with the extra pocket and is my favorite personal case for iPad. Have made a few for friends and they always love the cover.

4. What is your favorite season/holiday to decorate for?
That would be Christmas! I have 2 large trees, a village, and myriad other decorations. I’ve learned not to put EVERYTHING out each year and rotate decorations to keep it manageable.

5. What DIY tips or tricks would you like to share with customers?
When selecting coordinating fabrics for a single project, consider the scale of the print. The secret to mixing prints is to use different sizes, a small print with a large print in similar colors will work. Two prints that are both small or both large in scale will fight with each other, even if the colors are the same. For a third fabric, use a medium sized print or solid, the secret is varying the scale!

6. Any other interests or hobbies?
I love to bike and do Yoga. Biking keeps the calories melting and Yoga soothes my mind.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a proud wife and momma of a son and daughter. I became a stay at home mom about two years ago after my daughter was born. When I am not spending time with my family you will most likely will find me in a fabric store. I would rather shop for fabric than shoes! My friends must think I am crazy!

I come from a long line of women who love to sew. My great grandmother’s quilts are still treasured to this day. My mother made all of my dance costumes when I was a child. I feel so fortunate to have been taught the skill of sewing. Who would have ever thought it would become a lost art form? Now that I am an adult, I have come to realize that my most prized possessions are handmade items that were made for me or that were passed down to me. I hope that one day my children feel the same way about the items I make for them. I feel an enormous amount of pride that I can make something for someone that has not come from a store. A gift, I know was quality made and will last a lifetime.

2. What is your favorite thing you have made for yourself? For someone else?
I made a double wedding ring quilt for my sister and brother-in-law for their wedding. Quilting is special to me because it has been passed down from generation to generation in my family. I find quilting soothing and can not think of a better cozy pastime on cold winter nights.

3. What is your favorite season/holiday to decorate for?
My favorite holiday is 4th of July. I am obsessed with anything red, white and blue for the summer. Making my children sailor themed outfits is a favorite yearly project of mine.

4. Any other interests or hobbies?
I dabble in photography. I also enjoy running and exercising in general.

5. Do you have a favorite quote?

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m an Analyst Programmer by career, crafter, designer, wife, mother and passionate about sewing! I have been crafting as long as I can remember. As a child, I spent a lot of time designing, painting, and making all crafts in general. I grew up watching my mother sew, as a teenager, I would design dresses and she would create them. But it was when my daughter was born, in 2008 that I learned to sew and started to design clothing for kids. I’ve been loving every moment of this journey, it was a great joy to discover what I really wanted to do with my life!

2. What are your favorite projects to design?
Dresses, specially vintage style dresses.

3. What is your favorite thing you have made for yourself? For someone else?
I don’t sew much for myself, but my favorite project is the vintage inspired Juliette’s dress for girls from 2 to 10 years.

4. What is your favorite season/holiday to decorate for?
Definitely Christmas! I love the colors, the lights and the joy of getting ready for the Christmas holidays.

5. What DIY tips or tricks would you like to share with customers?
This is not a tip but an advice. Whenever you are afraid of certain sewing notions, such as buttonholes, zippers, etc, do not avoid projects that require those notions, take the challenge and try it over and over again until you nailed it, if someone else can do it, you can do it too!

6. Any other interests or hobbies?
Crafts in general. I enjoy making cards, hair clips, painting. And I love doing party decorations, I actually design for my own brand of printable party supplies www.printyourfiesta.com.

7. Do you have a favorite quote?

Hello! My name is Maggie. I’m the creator of Maggie Elizabeth Designs. I love to be creative and construct a product out of an idea and then inspire others to do the same.  I enjoy sewing and using that topic to be creative in. I appreciate all things artsy-craftsy and I also enjoy positive music, family date nights, baking, organizing, and home decorating. The reason behind creating my company was to encourage others to work with their hands and enjoy the rewarding benefits of learning a creative skill such as sewing. Shannon & Tiffany of Create Kids Couture

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
We are Shannon and Tiffany and we are the force behind Create Kids Couture! We met in 2008 and discovered we both had a love for sewing! We quickly bonded while teaching ourselves how to make clothes and accessories for our daughters. At that time we realized that while there were plenty of beautiful patterns out there, the niche for “over-the-top” children’s boutique patterns was lacking however we didn’t have the skills required to make patterns. We both opened up boutiques and remained friends continuing to work together occasionally and share new techniques we learned always! After years of requests from fans, we finally decided to share our unique, one-of-a-kind designs with everyone by forming Create Kids Couture in July 2011. When we opened we had just 5 patterns and after really discovering our love for designing we quickly grew to have over 90 patterns in our first year. Today we have over 180 PDF patterns and 11 paper patterns in our collection. We’ve grown to include not only children’s patterns, but also, doll, tweens, and women’s sizes as well!

2. What are your favorite projects to design?
We love to design girls clothes! We started sewing because we wanted the cute boutique clothes, but as stay at home moms we couldn’t actually afford them! I think clothes for our girls–no matter what size they grow into–will always be our favorite!

3. What is your favorite thing you have made for yourself? For someone else?
We don’t sew for ourselves too much! We’re too busy sewing for our children and our business. Every new thing we design ends up being our favorite piece, only to be outdone by our newest design! LOL!

4. What is your favorite season/holiday to decorate for?
Definitely Christmas! We love the magic of Christmas and teaching our children that giving is more important than receiving. Santa is in all of us!

5. What DIY tips or tricks would you like to share with customers?
Oh goodness! Our tip would be that you can make ANYTHING! We are both self-taught seamstresses and the number one thing we’ve learned is with all the videos and patterns available to you on the internet there is no reason you can’t use these tools to your advantage to learn to make whatever your heart desires!

6. What other interests or hobbies do you have?
We take all of our own product shots, so we really enjoy photography!
